Prediction Panel: Feb. 11 Kings vs. Islanders

Kings' Prediction Panel

Wow, I didn’t think the Kings would be playing this bad. Thus far, the Kings are 1-3 on this Grammy road trip, and the offense is squarely to blame.
So the Kings have decided to mix things up a bit and called up forwards Dwight King and Jordan Nolan from Manchester.
With the call-ups of King and Nolan, the Kings will infuse the line with Mike Richards with some fresh, enthusiastic forwards who still possess some offensive creativity.
My hope is their presence will help kick-start the offense of struggling Kings. My score: Kings 3, Islanders 2.
How did our intrepid panel of Kings bloggers guess? Let’s take a look…
Game 56: Los Angeles (26-19-10, 62 pts) vs. Islanders (22-23-8, 52 pts)
Meg Jerrell from Kings Court
Score: Kings 3, Islanders 2
Reason: Quick will want payback for last year when his brother-in-law Matty Moulson hit him up for a few goals. Hopefully family pride trumps the Kings ups and downs.
Record: 3-2
Wavesinair from Deep Inside the Kings
Score: Kings 2, Islanders 1
Reason: Kings open the floodgates, scoring 2 goals. Jon Quick slashes Matt Moulson in the ankle resulting a massive family feud, which is eventually resolved by Richard Dawson and Don Cherry.
Record: 3-2
Bobby Scribe from Surly and Scribe
Score: Islanders 2, Kings 1
Reason: You see the sun rise, you see the sun set, you learn to trust it
Record: 2-3
Jon Gillette from Rink Royalty
Score: Islanders 4, Kings 1
Reason: Team doesn’t get it yet. If they’re not going to play for Quick, as Hammond said, Quick’s not going to play for them. I think Quick sits this one out and the team struggles.
Record: 2-3
Score: Kings 1, Islanders, 0
Reason: It would be sad to play a low scoring game against the Islanders.
Record: 1-3
Score: Islanders 3, Kings 1
Reason: When I pick the Kings they lose; When I pick against them they Win. On that note and based on my love for the team I see this one as being all Isles. Moulson scores a couple against his brother in law and Doughty scores his 2nd in two games late in garbage time.
Record: 1-3
The Royal Half from The Royal Half
Score: Islanders 4, Kings 3
Reason: Despite 3 goals from Jordan Nolan and Dwight King, the Kings can’t hold on in Long Island.
Record: 0-5

Prediction Panel: Feb. 9 Kings vs. Panthers

Kings' Prediction PanelOne of these days, I’m gonna tally an exact guess, and Thursday’s game might be it. I need something to boost me up in the ratings, being at 1-3 is a bit humbling.

This will be a gritty game, with both teams deadlocked in a defensive struggle. The Panthers will want to strike first, but L.A.’s defense and the stellar goaltending of Jonny Quick will send it to the shootout.
Remember it was the Panthers, and specifically Sean Burgenheim, who knocked Mike Richards out of their first matchup this season way back in December. Richards was lost for 8 games, and the Kings spiraled enough to cost Terry Murray his job.
I’ll venture to say Kyle Clifford will register a Gordie Howe hat trick and Richards scores the eventual game-winner. End result: Kings 2, Panthers 1 in a shootout.
How did our panelists see this game? Let’s take a look…

Game 55: Los Angeles (26-18-10, 62pts) vs. Florida (24-17-11, 59pts)

Wavesinair from Deep Inside the Kings

Score: Kings 4, Panthers 2

Reason: What if these two clubs where in the same conference? It’d be a helluva match-up, no doubt. Still, they’re both obviously fighting for their playoff lives, so motivation shouldn’t be in short supply for either team. In the end though, the Lion will still be the King of the Florida jungle, extending their streak, and leaving the Panthers to lick their wounds in their own den.

Record: 3-1
Meg Jerrell from Kings Court

Score: Kings 4, Panthers 2

Reason: Florida has been good to the Kings this season, and the boys will have some extra jump in their step against the team that concussed Mike Richards earlier in the year. But Florida won’t give in without a fight, so they’ll score a couple to keep things interesting.

Record: 3-1
Bobby Scribe from Surly and Scribe.

Score: Kings 2, Panthers 1

Reason: Arbitrary and capricious guess.

Record: 2-2
Jon Gillette from Rink Royalty

Score: Kings 4, Panthers 2

Reason: This one gets a tad out of control for an out of conference game because of some bad blood but the Kings come out on top.

Record: 2-2
Score: Kings 3, Florida 1

Reason: Kings feeling the mojo and against all odds will be able to score 3 goals in 2 consecutive games. The 3rd period will deteriorate into a series of ugly melees and culminate in Kyle “the Big Red Dog” Clifford breaking a wooden chair over the back of Panthers Head Coach Kevin Dineen.

Record: 1-2
The Royal Half from The Royal Half

Score: Kings 1, Panthers 0, shootout

Reason: Jose Theodore is back from injury but Scott Clemmensen is in net tonight for Florida which can only mean one thing… he plays out of his mind and stifles the LA Kings offense. Or what is left of it anyway.

Record: 0-4

Prediction Panel: Feb. 7 Kings vs. Lightning

Kings' Prediction PanelWow, the Kings offense continues to be horrid, and it’s affecting the scores of the Prediction Panel.

For the most part, many bloggers are fans first. So the predictions usually favor the Kings. I have been among those hoping the offense is going to start clicking. But thus far, I have been let down. My record is 1-2 by wearing the purple and gold… errrrr, black and white glasses.

By trying to rationalize a resurgence of the Kings’ offense, I have had my head buried in the sand. This team hasn’t be able to score in two seasons. Why else should I expect something else. So, I’ve decided a different tactic. I’m picking against the Kings.

I checked out the stats and realized the Bolts have the worst goals against in the league. The Lightning might
not be able to stop teams from scoring on them. But they have nothing to
fear from the worst offense in the league, which happens to belong to
the Kings. So I’m going with Lightning 3, Kings 2.

How did the panel see it? Check it out…

Wavesinair from Deep Inside the Kings

Score: Lightning 4, Kings 3

Reason: The Lightning give up goals, but the score a ton too. And while the Kings ‘O’ gets back on track, its to the detriment of key coverage at times, allowing the Bolts talented forwards to exploit a frustrated Quick.

Record: 3-0

Meg Jerrell from Kings Court

Score: Kings 3, Lightning 2

Reason: Two losses in a row SHOULD be enough to light a fire under the Kings, but until the roster changes I’m not expecting much in terms of goal production.

Record: 2-1

Bobby Scribe from Surly and Scribe

Score: Kings 5, Lightning 3

Reason: One of our top 6 or Offensive D is due for a breakout game

Record: 1-2

Quisp from Jewels of the Crown

Score: Kings 7, Lightning 4

Record: 1-2

Jon Gillette from Rink Royalty

Score:
Kings 5, Lightning 2

Reason: If the Kings are as pissed off as I am, they come out flying, hitting everything that moves and crashing the net. How do you score in today’s NHL? By getting shots to the net and your big ass in the face of the opposition’s goalie!

Record: 1-2

Hipcheck from LA Kings Road Talk podcast

Score: Lightning 3 Kings 2

Reason: Tampa is the 8th best offensive team in the league. If Carolina can put up two goals, Tampa can put up three. Tampa’s GAA is the leagues worse but Kings simply can’t score. I’ll give the Kings 2 goals tonight bit will add; if they get Shutout against the Bolts; the yearly firesale should start ASAP and see our beloved team as Sellers as the NHL trade deadline approaches.

Record: 1-1

The Royal Half from The Royal Half

Score: 5-2 Lightning

Reason: Tampa Bay knows how to score goals… they just don’t know how to keep them out. But since they are starting Dwayne Roloson tonight… I’m sure he totally remembers how to be a goalie again.

Record: 0-3

Prediction Panel: Feb. 4 Kings vs. Hurricanes

Kings' Prediction PanelWell, I gave the Kings’ last-place offense too much credit. I thought they could grind one out against a fresh Blues team. They were outshot 25-14 through two periods, and just looked craptastic.

Especially when Drew Doughty missed a check on Matt D’Agostini, allowing D’Agostini to set up Jaime Langerbrunner to score the only goal of the game. So my prediction of a 2-1 Kings win dropped me to 1-1 overall.

So now, the Kings play their ninth back-to-back game of the season, where they have gone 2-2-4 in the second game, nabbing a point in the last six of those games. (Sticktap to The Hammer, Rich Hammond, for breaking it down)

The thing that I’m more encouraged by is how L.A. has responded after being shutout. This season, the Kings have been blanked six times. They have won four out of the five games following a shutout this season, with that one loss coming in a shootout to the Penguins. They have outscored their opponents 18-9 in those games.

So combining those two factors (performance in back-to-back games and performance in games after being shut out), my guess is the Kings will push the game to OT, where they will win 3-2.

Still no exact scores yet from the rest of the panel, but it’s still early. For a more in-depth breakdown of how the panel is doing, go check out Deep Inside The Kings. Paul has broken out a slide rule, protractor and some wicked algebraic equations for his Kingstradamus breakdown. Good stuff right there.

How did our other Kings prognosticators do? Check it out…

Meg Jerrell from Kings Court

Score: Kings 3, Hurricanes 1

Reason: The Kings will want to avenge last night’s loss, but let’s not get TOO excited – this is still an offensively challenged team.

Record: 2-0

Wavesinair from Deep Inside the Kings

Score: Hurricanes 3, Kings 0

Carolina might be ‘Columbus East’ but they also have 13 more points than the Jackets and as many wins as Anaheim. Couple that with the 3-0 beat down of Boston two days ago and this trip could get ugly really fast.

Record: 2-0

Bobby Scribe from Surly and Scribe

Score: Kings 2, Hurricanes 1

Reason: Tuomo Ruutu with the game winner for the Kings…that’s right, they trade him between periods.

Record: 1-1

Quisp from Jewels of the Crown

Score: Kings 4, Hurricanes 3

Reason:

Record: 1-1

Jon Gillette from RinkRoyalty.com

Score: Kings 3, Hurricanes 2

Reason: Last night was an embarrassment and I would hope that this team has enough pride to grind one out when presented with their first chance. It just so happens that the chance comes today and the Kings would do well by their fans to fly out of Raleigh with 2 points. The unfortunate piece; this is a non-conference game so the net gain in the standings is only the 2 points given to the winner.

Record: 1-1

Hipcheck from LA Kings Road Talk podcast

Score: Kings 2, Hurricanes 1

Reason: Canes defense is horrible and they are middle of the pack offensively, Kings should be able to muster up 2 if they play at the level they did last night.

Record: 1-0

The Royal Half from The Royal Half

Score: Kings 3, Hurricanes 2

Reason: The Hurricanes are the last place team in the East. The Kings beat Columbus, the last place team in the West, 3-2. That’s not an opinion. That is Science.

Record: 0-2

Prediction Panel: Feb. 3 Kings vs. Blues

Kings' Prediction Panel
I thought I had a good chance to nab the first exact score of the Panel, when the score was 2-1 after two periods. Then stupid Colton Gillies had to go and dash my hopes. Dumb  Gillies.

Tied at two, it looked as if Quisp from Jewels From the Crown was positioned perfectly to call the final score, 3-2 in OT. Then Doughty scored the hotly-debated last second goal heard ’round the blogosphere, and dashed Quisp’s guess.

The next game is a little tougher. Even though the Kings have beaten the Blues twice this season, St. Louis typically give L.A. fits.

So, I took into consideration that the Blues haven’t played in 10 days. Looking back, the Blues were white hot in January, but cooled right before the
All-Star Break.

My guess is the Kings should
be able to grind out another victory against the Blues for their third win of the
season series. But it’s not going to be easy.

My guess: Kings 2, Blues 1

Amazingly, none of the other panelists had that exact prediction, so I feel I’m sitting pretty.

Here’s how the rest of the Kings Prognosticators’ predictions…

Quisp from Jewels From the Crown

Score: Kings 7, Blues 3

Reason: A reason? Hmm. Well, I have this sports stats book from the future…

Record: (1-0)

Bobby Scribe from Surly and Scribe

Score: Kings 8, Blues 1

Reason: If I am right, it will make Quisp’s head explode, given his prediction.

Record: 1-0

Jon Gillette from Rink Royalty

Score: Kings 4, Blues 2

Reason: The Kings don’t wait until the last second, or any chance of controversy, in this one.

Record: 1-0

Meg Jarrell from Kings Court

Score: Blues 2, Kings 1, OT

Reason: Because we always seem to struggle against teams from the Central Division, and this one is actually decent.

Record: 1-0

Paul Armbruster from Deep Inside the Kings

Score: Blues 2, Kings 1

Reason: Rust: Part 2 – Now it’s the Blues turn to shake off the long break. Hot before, I see them staying so at home. Plus, they’ve lost both games against the Kings this year, so that’s good motivation. The Kings will battle as usual, but their not-so-good play against Columbus, coupled with the ‘lucky’ last second goal, will be reminders that they are still struggling with the ‘O’.

Record: 1-0

The Royal Half from The Royal Half

Score: Kings 4, Blues 2

Reason: After playing Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” in the dressing room prior to the game, the LA Kings regain their scoring touch… from pre-season.

Record: 0-1

Hipcheck from LA Kings Road Talk Radio

Score: Blues 3, Kings 1

Reason: If it took the Kings 60 minutes and 1 second to score 3 against the BJs 31st ranked defense I don’t like our chances against the team ranked #2 in GAA.

Prediction Panel: Feb. 1 Kings vs. Blue Jackets

Kings' PrognosticatorI came across an incredible idea when the Kings played the Senators before the All-Star break. There was a feature from the Ottawa Citizen, asking their reporters to predict what the result of the upcoming Senators’ game would be. Basically, the writers took a stab at the score and one sentence supporting their decision.

I thought that was brilliant, and was surprised no one had done it before here in L.A. So I reached out to a plethora of Kings bloggers (since there’s like 37 now), and asked if they would be interested in doing  some shared content with other bloggers. Overwhelmingly, they were down. And thus, the Kings Prediction Panel was created.

Keep in mind, this is a work in progress. Since it’s open-ended, all the bloggers can use the info as they see fit, just so long as they don’t change any of the opinions from the other writers. It’s just a small way to bring some goodwill and some friendly competition between our respective sites.

I’ve always considered bloggers as the hardest of the hardcore fans, since we are driven to cover the team with our own input. Plus, everyone has an opinion. They are kind of like elbows, everyone has at least one. Unless you lost both in a horrible accident and lost them both or were born without arms. Which means my analogy sucks, but you get my meaning.

I’m hoping this project evolves into a unique experience of all to enjoy. Be sure to check out everyone’s blog when you get a chance. Each of these prognosticators have stellar sites. So, without further ado, here’s the panelists:

Fake Chris Kontos from The Royal Half

Score: Blue Jackets 2, Kings 1, SO

Reason: After watching the Columbus Blue Jackets lose 6-0 to the San Jose Sharks Monday night… I’m fully prepared for them to beat the LA Kings 2-1 in a shootout.

Jon Gillette from Rink Royalty

Score: Kings 4, Blue Jackets 1

Reason: The Kings have had 9 days to reflect on their poor performance and have to be itching to get out there and show everyone that they’re ready to kick some ass down the stretch and grab the Pacific Division.

Quisp from Jewels From the Crown

Score: Kings 3, Blue Jackets 2, SO.

Reason: it’s a 3-2 league.

Bobby Scribe from Surly and Scribe

Score: Kings 3, Blue Jackets 1

Reason: dun dun dun dundun dun dun dun dundun dun dun dun dundun dundundun JACKETS SUCK!

Meg Jarrell from Kings Court

Score: Kings 3, Blue Jackets 1

Reason: The Kings play the day before Groundhog Day, and I’m convinced the boys didn’t see their shadow during the All-Star break.

Paul Armbruster from Deep Inside the Kings

Score: Kings 3, Jackets 1

Reason: Rust vs. Must: Kings struggle early, trying to find their legs, while the boys from Ohio play desperate ‘must win’ hockey after being embarrassed last night. In the end, the Kings do just enough to squeak out a win after scoring an empty netter with under a minute to go.

Matt Murray from Life In Hockeywood

Score: Kings 2, Blue Jackets 1, SO

Reason: All season, the Kings haven’t been scoring. I doubt they will have solved that glaring issue over the past nine days… Quick will continue to shine, however.
