Darryl Sutter, who stepped down as Flames general manager in December 2010, is 7-1-4 since replacing Terry Murray as Kings coach on Dec. 17. He had taken over as Calgary coach during the 2002-03 campaign and added the GM title the following season.
• LA Times: A sentimental win for Darryl Sutter
The Kings were briskly efficient, putting a strong hold on the game by scoring three times in a 15-minute stretch in the second period on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
• LAKings.com: The Key Three: Jan. 14
Consider that the Kings have a 15-5-2 record this season when they score at least one power-play goal in a game. For whatever reason, the Kings seem to be playing with more confidence and urgency on the power play of late, and it’s paying off with goals.

Calgary did manage to get two pucks past Quick -- but not the post. With three minutes remaining in the period, Blake Comeau picked up a Bouma rebound but hit the far post. On the same shift, Backlund again caught iron after gaining the zone with speed.

"If anything he was a little bit more focused and wanted to win it a little more tonight. I don't know if you can get more intense than him. The guys liked it. It's definitely changed from Terry [Murray] before. Right now it seems we've been doing pretty well under him." – Anze Kopitar, on Darryl Sutter's approach to the game.
“Execution. There aren’t too many fadeaway plays, where you’re on the back of your heels trying to make a pass. It’s very focused. Everybody is in an athletic position. We’re trying to do what the coach tells us, and I think we’re getting a lot of shots through, and screens in front.’’ – Dustin Penner, on the improved power play.
“I thought we had a sluggish start and I thought we played really well in the second period. I thought our power play scored us a big goal, and we’re learning how to play with leads. It’s not something we’re used to. It’s a struggle.’’ – Darryl Sutter, on the game.
“He was good tonight, made some real good saves. If he would have had a worse night, we probably would have won.” – Mikael Backlund, on the performance of Jonathan Quick.
