• AP: Kings get 3-2 SO win over Ducks in Sutter’s debut
Dustin Brown scored in the third period and got the deciding goal in a shootout, lifting the Kings to a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night. Mike Richards scored in his return to the lineup from a concussion, Drew Doughty had two assists and Jonathan Quick made 20 saves.
• LA Times: Kings get win in Darryl Sutter's debut as coach
Sutter was 3 minutes 11 seconds away from getting a victory in regulation in his Kings debut. Instead, he had to wait through overtime and a tense shootout for the Kings to accomplish the mission, winning, 3-2, against the Ducks on Thursday night at Staples Center with Dustin Brown clinching it.
• LA Times: Darryl Sutter is ready to make some noise with the Kings
(The Kings) will be hearing full blast from Sutter, the second of six hockey-playing brothers who made it to the NHL from the farm in Viking, Canada. He will be loud. He will be blunt. He will blister the ears of those who don't go all-out every shift, and it's well past time for that and to use ice time as a carrot.
• NHL.com: Kings top Ducks 3-2 in shootout
Anaheim fell to 0-9-4 over its past 13 road games dating to their last road victory on Oct. 27. The Ducks have been outscored 48-22 in that period. Anaheim is 2-6-2 under Bruce Boudreau since firing Randy Carlyle on Nov. 30. It was Brown's second shootout winner in as many games – he got the only goal in the tiebreaker for a 3-2 win at Toronto on Monday.
• OC Register: Hiller unable to save Ducks from loss to Kings
There was a time when Jonas Hiller stood out in the shootout. And there was a time when the goalie made the big save his team needed. And there was a time when the Ducks knew how to win. None of that seems to apply this season. Hiller couldn't stop two of the three shootout tries by the Kings, and the Ducks were left to take their 13th consecutive road defeat, a 3-2 decision Thursday night at Staples Center.

“I’ve been struggling, maybe the last year and a half, on my shootouts, so I’ve just been working on a little more of simplifying my moves. I was going to go exactly where Stolly [Jarrett Stoll] went and I felt like he [Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller] was shading that side of the net so I just switched it up at the last second there.’’
Dustin Brown, on his shootout goal.
“I felt good. A little tired at the end of the game there, but I think that’s just two weeks of not taking a hit or giving a hit or battling much. It was a good game for me. I felt good coming back, and obviously it was nice to help out there. It’s a stepping stone, but we know that we have to be better. We don’t want to give up that third-period lead, but it was nice to see us pull it off at the end.’’ – Mike Richards, on how he felt.
“I liked the way our forwards played. I thought they were really good in all three zones. I think we moved the puck pretty good. I know our power play didn’t score, but they certainly had a lot of good opportunities, and that’s a good thing. And then obviously, to kill that power play in overtime, against three or four of those guys that they put on the ice, we did a good job. Mitchell and Greene and Stoll and Richards and Kopitar, they really did a good job.’’ – Daryl Sutter, on what he liked.
"I think it was a little bit of both. I felt really good lately, the last 15 games I played pretty much the way I did tonight. Just tonight finally I got those two assists. I haven't been getting many points lately and I need to." – Drew Doughty, on Daryl Sutter.
"He's more animated. He's more vocal than Terry was. It's different, for sure." – Matt Greene, on Sutter.
