More distinction for Doughty
On Friday, defenseman Drew Doughty was named to the NHL YoungStars team. He'll be teamed up with first overall pick Steven Stamkos, Luke Schenn and 8 other rookies will travel to Montreal. Granted, it's just a three-on-three exhibition during a weekend full of events. But it raises his exposure in the minds of the hockey writers.Since I wrote the Doughty Manifesto on Monday, I've gotten comments from all over. A concurrent thread was started over at LetsGoKings. Yahoo's Puck Daddy linked to the article, and I've been receiving comments like this:
Oh, Doughty got the Calder all wrapped up me thinks. And:
Drew! Calder trophy for sure. Stanley cup in the next two-three years is my prediction, and then I can die happy! And:
Doughty's nickname is doughnuts. Maybe we can send a box of KrispyKremes to all the beat writers. The best way to people's hearts is thrutheir stomachesBut the best comment I got was emailed to me from one Tim Booth...
Matt,
It's nice to see enthusiasm for once after so many years of (expletive deleted). Life's hard as a Kings fan. There's no coverage in the local newspapers, and highlights are rarely shown on ESPN. Thank goodness for DVRs, eh?
I totally get what you are saying. This team is full of young players, and Drew Doughty should be the face. Sure, Dustin's the captain, and Anze is there too. But it would be a shot in the arm for Kings fans for Drew to get this recognition. We deserve this.
Your blog, along with other stories I've been reading, like Helene Elliott's article a few weeks ago, hopefully will find the attention of those East Coast-baised writers from New York and Canada.
It's nice to know two things: 1) People actually suffer through my blog and 2) fans agree that Drew Doughty is the real deal, and should be in the conversation of the Calder. Yeah, he's not putting up the points of the other rookies, but he plays a different game.
Other than stories, I'm not quite sure what else can be done to elevate DD's presense. Except for maybe the doughnut idea. Dammit, now I'm hungry for doughnuts.
Here's some Doughty stories that have surfaced recently.

Im onboard with you propping up my boy, DD. He's the best defenseman to be drafted so high in ages.
Something needs to be done, something drastic. Maybe a huge poster on the hotels across the way from Staples Center or something like that.
Too bad you didn't write this sooner, we could've tried to build a huge Kings float for the Rose Parade on Jan. 1!
