BlogNation: Red Wings battle back to beat Kings

• AP: Red Wings beat Kings in shootout 4-3.

• LA Times: Kings put up a good fight in loss to the Red Wings.
If the Detroit Red Wings thought they would repeat as champions on their skills alone, if they thought adding prize free agent Marian Hossa would cure the Stanley Cup hangover that sabotaged every would-be repeat winner since 1998, the Kings reminded them Monday that it won't come easily.
• Daily News: Late turnover proves costly in Kings' loss.

• Canadian Press: Filppula, Red Wings beat Kings in shootout.
"It was a tight game. They played a good solid defence, they were backing up pretty good and took advantage of our mistakes," Zetterberg said. "But I think we still played a little better defence tonight and didn't let them shoot that much. So that was progress."
Looking through purple-hued glasses

• The Royal Half: Boyz II Men
I hate it when Detroit comes to town. I don't hate Detroit because of the 1 great playoff series the Kings had with them in the last 10 years. No... I hate Detroit because every time they come to town, their fans come to the Staples Center in droves, outnumbering the Kings fans 3:1.

• A Queen Among Kings: I think I have an ulcer

This brings us to: Denis Gauthier. Ahhh, Gauts. You're on the left side with the center of the ice wide open with less than two minutes to go in the 3rd period and your team is up by one. Why in god's name did you pass up the middle? This turnover cost us the game. It literally did. How many people expect their respective goalie to stop a Valtteri Filppula breakaway? Yeah, I didn't expect Jason LaBarbera to stop that either. There were at least two other options to make with that pass, instead you go with the third and incorrect choice. I know he feels horrible about the pass; his actions after the goal was scored weren't lost on me. But still, the game was at an elevated stress level for me as it was, and watching Filppula snag the puck and charge toward Barbs was a downright heart breaker.

• The Kingsternet: Wing Nuts screw me over
Any Kings fan can tell you how irritating it is to see all the red jerseys that show up for a game against the Red Wings. It may as well be a home game for Detroit. The crowd is louder for a Wings goal even without the goal horn and the music. When Detroit scored last night to tie the score late in the third period you would have thought you were watching a game at Joe Louis Arena.
• The Throne Room: Critical Mistake Late Costs Kings a Point

Jason LaBarbera I thought played his best game of the season. None of the three goals in regulation could really be faulted to him, and he made a hell of a lot of big saves to keep the Kings ahead in the third period. As much as I give the guy a hard time for his penchant for the soft goal, I kept waiting for him to lay an egg tonight and he didn’t. I just wish I had reason to believe he was capable of consistently performing to the level he did tonight.

• Inside Hockey: Another step forward

In capsule form, what happened was that the young Kings took no notice of the veteran team they were playing, instead playing a solid game themselves on defense and with the puck. Their reward was denied them by one mistake, but the team looked like a unit, not intimidated by the caliber of competition. This surely is another step forward.

And from the other side of the ice, the Detroit viewpoint.

• Detroit Free Press: Datsyuk, Zetterberg score in shootout to beat Kings.
“Going into the third period, kind of a tough, cheesy goal goes in, and you just stay determined,” Mike Babcock said. “I thought in the last 10 minutes we really tilted the rink and we had a lot of opportunities. We forced a turnover and we were able to bury one. If you’re confident and you stay determined, there’s always a chance.
• Freep.com: High-scoring Marian Hossa also solid on defense.
With Johan Franzen nursing a sprained left knee, the coaching staff decided to reunite Grind Line mates Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby and Darren McCarty on Monday. "We've had a lot of fun together and a lot of success," Draper said. "I don't think any of us would have thought in our late 30s we'd still be a line."
• The Detroit News: Wings prevail in shootout

"It's both good and bad. It's good that we get the wins, but in a few games, we should be able to win a little easier," said Henrik Zetterberg.

• Able to Yzerman: A Night at Staples

Ice girls. King maidens skating, wobbling, twisting and stretching to scrape up shavings during commercial breaks. Each of them young midwestern girls who headed to Hollywood, encouraged by unsavory agents who promised them riches and multiple lines in movies alongside accomplished thespians.

A fine addition to the hockey landscape, in my opinion.  But according to the well-fed woman sitting next to me (yes, a Wing fan), they were disgusting at best. “Oh, look at that one. She can’t even skate! I suppose she’s going to bend over now...yes, she did. I called it. Slut.”
