WTF constitutes an "upper extremity?"
According to head coach Terry Murray after last night's game, defenseman Jack Johnson suffered an injury in the first period to an "upper extremity." It was explained to me earlier in the locker room that because of the drama of injury disclosure in the playoffs last season, that the league instigated a new rule. No longer will a player's medical status be announced as a particular injury. At the GM meetings this past summer, every GM voted in favor of limiting injury information, with the protection of the players as the sole reason. However, this limit of information puts the media and fans at a loss. Fans have a right to know if their favorite player is going to play. Media has a right to report if a player is going to be on the shelf for an extended period of time.
The rule does make sense, as no one likes to believe that there are some players who would take advantage of such knowledge. But at the same time, this is hockey, and injuries happen. How much protection can you honestly give an injured player, bar from wrapping him in bubble wrap?
So, did Jack hurt his shoulder or his arm or his neck? According to the new rules, all of the above or none of the above.
EDIT: Turns out TSN is reporting that Johnson suffered an arm injury and may be out three months. If true, this news couldn't come at a worse time for L.A. Already thin on defense, the loss of Johnson prompted L.A. to acquire defenseman Kyle Quincey from the Detroit Red Wings, as per Red Wings Corner.
