Is this the new Kings jersey?

FAN590's Howard Berger reported today that he has seen the Kings new third jersey, and his description of it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The Kings will unveil a predominantly black jersey with the letters “L A” inside a pencil-point logo on the front. Broad white stripes will adorn each arm. A thin white stripe will run horizontally on each side of the jersey, just beneath the shoulder. There are no stripes at the bottom of the uniform. The color purple – widely evident in the Kings’ primary jersey – will likely be featured in the number outlines of the alternate, though the photo copy I have doesn’t clearly show it. A better idea would have been a reprise of the Kings’ original purple and gold uniforms from 1967, but the club marketers are apparently not bent on tradition.

Now, Berger apparently cannot post pictures of the jerseys because of his "licensing source." But that didn't stop some fans online, who quickly came up with an image, allegedly from the new Electronic Arts NHL09 hockey video game. I took the liberty to blow the image up.

Now, I tried to verify that this image was actually from the new game on the official website, then I poked around over on GameSpot which has more screenshots. Nothing.

So, as of right now, I cannot say that this is a correct representation of what the Kings' new jersey looks like.
And after Monday's craziness involving the Kings and a certain city in Missouri, I want to make it perfectly clear. This MAY or MAY NOT be the Kings third jersey. It's PURE SPECULATION, people.

But let's say that, for sake of discussion, that it is...

Man, does that uniform suck.

Seriously, the use of the white is just uninspired. There's no flow, just thrown on there. Horizontal on the sleeves, vertical on the shorts and diagonal on the legs. And what it that at the base of the collar? Please tell me they aren't bringing the tie back. That was the one minus from the Kings previous third jersey. I never quite knew what to do with it. I mean, if I left it untied, it looked unkempt. If I tied it in a pretty bow, I looked like a dandy.

But I digress. This jersey doesn't even come close to Berger's description. I also find it hard to believe that the Kings would have another black jersey. Why not more purple? Why not more silver? Why not more cowbell?

The truth of the matter is, no matter what it looks like, people are going to hate it. Many of the fans I know never forked out the cash for a new Reebok EDGE jersey, partially because the old jerseys still look like the new ones, but mostly because of the high price. That was the case with me. I settled for an old-styled Reebok jersey that I got online for half-price this off-season.

The jersey is yet another attempt to get NHL fans to spend their hard-earned dough. But if Kings fans wanted to stay current, they would have had to buy six jerseys. Remember? When they rolled out the new jerseys in 1998, the home and aways were adorned with the Shield, and the third jersey had the Crown. Then they switched them up, with the Crown as the main logo, and the Shield relegated to secondary status.

The people who have yet fork out $114 for the EDGE jerseys, now will have a third, over-priced option. Why to go, NHL ad-wizards.

    Well Matt,
If nothing else, these colors would be truly appropriate from a metaphoric standpoint! Now the real question is who/or whom of us will feel such extremes more in the coming season (BLACK AND BLUE) the fans or the players?
p.s. We would never want any single part of the organization to preserve that which long time Kings fans hold dear-Forum Gold and BlueXXX/purple!!!

if they really wanted to do something that would have been good looking.... all they had to do was mix in all of the old. although i am a huge fan of the 'purple and gold" what i really like is the original logo. now, put that on a purple and black uniform and "tweak" the rest of it ( sans the chevy logo )
and you might have a great looking uniform. any thughts?
