Buffalo Sabres: The Cure For What Ails You
Blake and Johnson get another start on D, along with Kopitar, Ivanans and Zeiler. The big news is Jon Quick is starting in goal for the Kings. Aubin has played in the last two games for the Kings, and with back-to-back games, Crawford decided to go with his young goaltender.
Zeiler gets whistled 20 seconds into the game for interference, as the Kings go on the penalty kill. Kopitar and O'Sullivan out for the first shift, and played well. Dustin Brown gets a breakaway, but whiffs on it, as the Sabres turn and go.
The crowd is really animated, and I see a lot of Sabres jerseys. Although, they aren't the new ones, but rather the old throwback blue ones, with the original buffalo over the crossed sabres logo.
Jack Johnson shoots the puck in, and Thibault skates behind to play the puck. Kopitar intercepts Thibault's clearing pass, and feeds Cammalleri for an easy goal. It's the second game in a row for Cammy to score. Looks like being reunited with Kopitar is a good thing.
Armstrong tries to skate in to redirect a pass in front of Thibault, and gets hit with interference for the Kings' second PK. Kopitar and O'Sullivan are out there again to kill the penalty, with Nagy and Handzus on the other.
Dustin Brown knocks a one-timer from Johnson by the blueline past Thibault for his 12th goal of the season. The Kings are dominating this game thus far. The Sabres look as if they played last night, which, of course, they did.
Nice production out of the fourth line tonight.
Mair and Spacek get two minutes a piece for roughing, and cammy gets two for the same. Cammalleri and Spacek lock up for a little how-do-you-do behind the net as play is stopped.
Nice little two-on-one against the Kings is halted when Quick snaps the puck out of the air. It was an impressive save, as he slid over with the pass.
The DAM line comes close to another score, when Brown feeds Kopitar out in front. He gets a few whacks at it, but the puck is shooed away. That line is scary good, attacking with gusto every time they are on the ice. Cammalleri is playing a little more physical, and Brown is playing a little more smart. That is good for the Kings, bad for their opponents.
The Kings get a power play, as Calder, Nagy and Armstrong take the faceoff deep in Buffalo's zone. Preissing beats Thibault side for a power play goal. Stuart and Nagy get the assists. It was a methodical goal, whereas the line out there doesn't have the flash of the DAM line. But it was effective.
Seconds later, Modry scored to make it 4-0, this time beating Thibault glove side. Visnovsky and Kopitar get the assists.
So far, the Kings have outshot the Sabres, 14-4. It's the type of effort I was hoping for against this team. Dustin Brown had three hits in the first, adding to his league lead.
First period: Kings 4, Sabres 0
The Kings get a short-handed goal, when Brown evades a Buffalo defender as he skates in on goal. He shoots, and the rebound goes to Handzus, who pops it in for his second goal of the season. Amazingly, coach Lindy Ruff is staying with Thibault.
The Sabres get two penalties within a minute of each other to give L.A. a two-man advantage. And guess what? Armstrong finally gets a tally in the goal column. Kopitar gets his third point of the game, matching his season-high. And the Kings are not letting off the gas.
The Kings get another power play, when Brown scores his second of the game, for his eighth. He has never had a hat trick in his young career, and I'm pretty sure Kopitar and Cammalleri will be feeding Number 23 every time they are on the ice. Kopitar gets his fourth assist, along with Cammy's first assist.
The Sabres finally get on the board, when Stafford redirects a Roy shot past Quick for his fifth of the season. It sort put a buzzkill over the crowd, but the Kings forge ahead. I finally hear a "Let's Go, Buff-A-Lo" chant from underneath the press box when the Sabres go on the power play. But the penalty is killed, as we head to the third period.
Second period: Kings 7, Sabres 1 An unfortunate bounce off the boards goes right to Vanek, who pops it past Quick for his eighth of the season. Stafford gets the assist for his second point of the game.
Preissing scores his second of the game, when he rockets one past Miller on the power play. There's really nothing else to root for in this game, except for Brown to get a third goal.
The Sabres have been humiliated in this game. Thing is, these games happen, and the Kings have been on the wrong end of them many times.
Final score: Kings 8, Sabres 2
